A Decade of Houston

It's been 10 years since I left the Houston music scene. Montrose has gentrified and the traffic is insane.

I had recently graduated from UH and moved into an apartment on the East End. These few moments of solitude were a great way to end an already aggressive five years of bouncing between the 3rd Ward, Montrose, Midtown, Downtown and Spring Branch. I had a steady job and worked toward continuing a "creative lifestyle" moving through the coffee shops, Boehemos, syncing up with other friends in the loop, the occasional art show in Montrose or Indie Book Fest at the Menil, all while creating art and design with my girlfriend on the daily. The world never seemed brighter.

The MetroRail had recently expanded out towards UH and the Republican National Convention was being hosted on campus. Midtown was under construction, converting large empty lots next to the Continental Club into apartments. Construction crews were plenty, and I hit a nail on my scooter while on my way to work one day... luckily I was able to limp the thing back to the apt complex that afternoon. The Astros had just won the World Series and there was a huge parade in downtown. I was able to watch the whole thing from the top of a hotel with a rooftop bar. We shut down the office for a day and went to go celebrate. The Super Bowl was coming to town, and I was excited... dare I say optimistic about the future? All was grand.

Then work shifted. They shut down the company, I pivoted towards tech and had my laptop stolen from my car (broken window and all). Along with that, they took the website files I had been working on. The site was distinct, colorful and last but not least, unforgiving. This website is the spiritual successor to the unlaunched Houston Hustles Harder website.

It's different... because Houston is different. Houston is an amalgamation of many things and if you open your eyes you can see it all. The city has its high points, and it has its low points.

This website is a 3rd space for Houstonians looking for a local site dedicated to chatting with other Houstonians about general happenings. If you've moved out to the burbs, I'm out here with you. If you're still in the loop, have a drink at Big Star Bar or Grand Prize for me, just don't get hit on the head with a beer glass.

Connect or create whatever you like (within reason and with respect) on here. This site is for you.

Hope You Enjoy It 🤙

Houston's been turning into a giant concrete brick... where every company wants to maximize the lots they buy by placing multiple birdhouses on a lot meant for one house. No front yards and no backyards... where will the children play? Where will the people get their grounding? The concrete shifts and breaks because of the clay topsoil we have 5 feet under the entire city. We don't even want to put trees up to help with the topsoil anymore. We just rip them out of the ground and move along. I've not been liking these changes but maybe I'm just getting old... ?(
